Eyam (1)

Eyam, sometimes called the "plague village", is famous for the bravery of its inhabitants when it was struck by the plague in September 1665.

Rather than risking its spread to neighbouring villages, and further afield, they cut themselves off until the danger had passed.

This took until the autumn of the following year, by which time 260 villagers had died, around two-thirds of the total population.
