The photo on the previous page showed a house, possibly in the Otley area, with a photographer taking a picture of a family group. Among my collection of Duncan photos are several glass negatives which appear to have been taken on that occasion, and this is the image from one of them.
The old man in the centre of the group is believed to be Thomas Duncan (1830-1906), who lived in a large house called Belmont (this isn't it). One of his sons, John Booth Duncan, is known to have been a keen amateur photographer, and it seems likely that he would have taken either this photo or the preceding one.
Thomas married Mary Anne Renton (1830-1887), and they had 9 children:
Albaney Renton (1857-1924)
Mary Ann (1859-1895)
Thomas (1860-1911)
John Booth (1862-1943)
James (1864-1944)
Elizabeth (1866-1930)
Isabella (1867-1915)
William Arthur (1869-1869)
Ernest Hastings (1871-1916)
Mary Ann (1859-1895)
Thomas (1860-1911)
John Booth (1862-1943)
James (1864-1944)
Elizabeth (1866-1930)
Isabella (1867-1915)
William Arthur (1869-1869)
Ernest Hastings (1871-1916)
Assuming a date in the early 1900s, the young ladies are likely to be Elizabeth and Isabella, but identifying which of the sons these are is much harder. Knowing who the people are could of course be helpful, but my main interest at this point is finding out where the house was. If you can help with this you can email me at akpak@paxnet.co.uk
