Rutland
Water (1)
Rutland, England's smallest county, had a raw deal in the late 20th
century. In 1974 it was abolished as a county and absorbed into
neighbouring Leicestershire, though it has now regained its
independence.
As if that wasn't enough, it had a great chunk removed when it was
flooded by an enormous reservoir, the largest man-made lake in western
Europe.
It's not all bad, though: as well as supplying water to the driest part
of the country, Rutland Water has become a major leisure attraction,
with country walks and safe cycle tracks, fishing, sailing and cruises
on the Rutland Belle, as well as birdwatching and nature reserves.
