Joan's MBE Medal

The Order of the British Empire was instituted in 1917 by King George V. Appointments are made in recognition of significant contributions to the life of the nation, such as service to a profession, community or voluntary group.

In Joan's case it marked over 50 years service to natural history societies in Yorkshire.
