In October 2001 Joan went to Buckingham Palace to receive her award from Her Majesty the Queen. However, she's not the first in the family to be honoured in this way: the MBE was awarded to her own aunt for services to education, and to her late husband Colin's aunt for her work as a YMCA volunteer during the First World War.
